The Liberty Bell may be damaged, but it is a symbol of American independence and the American spirit of resiliency. The Liberty Bell is located in Independence National Historical Park, in Philadelphia.
The bell acquired its crack some time in the 19th century, reportedly when tolling to proclaim the death of Chief Justice John Marshall.
Today the bell is protected against further damage. The inscription on the bell reads:
Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof Lev. XXV. v X.
